About Salco

Back in 2010 after a series of meetings held between executives of the NZ based Fiordland Lobster Co and a number of local South Australian Lobster fishers, a development group of shareholders was established.

This was the the beginning of the “South Australian Lobster Company”. These shareholders took a 50% stake in a joint venture with FLC which led to the establishment of a best practice facility in the heart of the Limestone Coast of South Australia.

This combined with a supply chain which took in the length of the Southern Zone coast was seen to be the ideal way for all stakeholders to be able to develop objectives around inclusive, transparent pricing and market access which would hopefully enhance returns to the catching fleet.

This model had served FLC well in New Zealand as the company vision was held, that as the primary risk takers in the increasingly high profile and valued Southern Rock Lobster fisheries, the Fishers themselves deserved to be sustainably rewarded through this collaborative approach.

SALCO was altered when it was agreed that the two entities should formally be merged under the one board and management structure to provide additional opportunity to grow the business. SALCO has remained true to this structure in the following years and has in fact grown to be one of the largest exporters of the species ‘jasus edwardsii’ in Australia, with acquisitions of strategic assets and personnel in three states.

The South Australian supply chain was developed with the company moving to permanent dockside premises in Southend and a strategic depot in Robe to future-proof the business. This combined with the growth into Victoria and Tasmania, through Alive Seafoods and Red Dragon, combined with enhanced opportunities in South Australia with Southern Ocean Rock Lobster in Port Lincoln, allows SALCO to source the highest quality product, from the pristine waters of southern Australia at all times.

This approach and development allows us to ensure the links to our primary markets can be fully supported across the entire year.
